EverBlue FAQ

Application & Processing

How is EverBlue antifouling applied?

EverBlue is simply applied to the clean and dry boat hull using standard rollers or brushes. For the first application, a primer with a standard commercial primer is required. We recommend the antifouling primer Primocon from International for this. When reapplying EverBlue, a primer is no longer necessary. EverBlue should be applied thinly and always with full coverage.

How much EverBlue antifouling do I need for my boat?

When applied thinly, the coverage rate is 12-15 m2 per liter. For the first application of EverBlue and in cases of high fouling pressure, we recommend applying two coats. In many cases, refreshing with one coat is sufficient thereafter. If applied efficiently, 750 ml of EverBlue should be enough for 2 coats on the hull of a 7m sailboat. Inexperienced users may apply slightly thicker layers of paint, which can result in increased consumption of EverBlue antifouling.

How fast does EverBlue antifouling dry?

EverBlue antifouling is dry enough after approx. 45 minutes for the second coat to be applied. The coating is fully cured after approx. 2.5 hours at an outside temperature > 15°C and a relative humidity of < 75%.

Can I apply EverBlue myself or do I need a professional?

EverBlue is ideally suited for easy self-application. Solvent-free, EverBlue can be applied in enclosed spaces and without a respiratory mask using standard rollers and brushes. The gray color makes it easier for the user to ensure full coverage. Dried areas are darker than wet areas. This allows the user to easily see when and where to start applying the second coat. Inexperienced users may apply slightly thicker layers of paint, which can result in increased consumption of EverBlue antifouling.

What materials can EverBlue be applied to?

EverBlue antifouling products are compatible with all common boat building materials such as GRP, wood, and metal. For the first application on an existing antifouling from another provider or an untreated boat hull, a primer is required. EverBlue antifouling products are perfectly compatible with Primocon from International.

Do I have to sand off the existing antifouling before application?

Sanding off old antifouling paint is only necessary for VC17 from International. If an EverBlue product has already been applied, the application can be done directly on the old antifouling. For a product from another provider, a primer with Primocon from International is required. In any case, the substrate should be dry, clean, and free of bubbles, flaking, or similar defects. In particular, the gelcoat/topcoat should be completely intact.

At what temperatures can I process EverBlue antifouling?

The ideal processing temperature is between 15-30°C with humidity below 85%. At temperatures between 10-15°C, a drying time of 8 hours should be observed as a precaution. EverBlue can be applied from as low as 5°C, in which case the drying time can be up to 24 hours.

Why does EverBlue antifouling come in 2 cans?

The large can contains the water-based paint, and the small can contains our catalyst. Together, they make up our antifouling coating. As long as the paint and catalyst have not cured, the catalyst would react with the paint and thus change the properties of the paint. To avoid this, we fill the paint and catalyst separately.

Is it important to maintain the 3:1 mixing ratio?

Yes, the ratio of paint (large can) and catalyst (small can) is very important. If there is less catalyst in the paint, premature fouling may occur. If there is more catalyst in the paint, the coverage rate decreases, so the costs per m2 of coating become higher.

How long can I still use EverBlue after mixing it together?

EverBlue can be used for 3-4 weeks after mixing. As with all paints and coatings, it is important to ensure airtight storage away from direct sunlight after opening and mixing.

Effectiveness & Durability

What makes EverBlue antifouling special?

EverBlue antifouling products are based on our Catalyst Coating formulas, so they are free of solvents, silicones, toxic chemicals, and the constant abrasion of microplastics. Standard biocidal products release large amounts of copper compounds and/or toxic chemicals. Biocide-free products are mostly so-called self-polishing coatings, which means nothing other than the constant abrasion of microplastics that end up in the water. EverBlue effectively protects the boat hull from fouling without polluting the water or releasing toxic solvents during processing.

How does EverBlue’s Catalyst Coating technology work?

EverBlue prevents fouling through the continuous catalytic generation of very small amounts of active oxygen directly on the surface of the coated boat hull. Active oxygen quickly breaks down back into water and oxygen without polluting the water, while simultaneously preventing microorganisms from settling on the boat hull. Microorganisms form the breeding ground for organisms such as algae and mussels. Without this breeding ground, no fouling occurs. This is how EverBlue effectively protects against fouling on the boat hull without polluting the water.

How long does EverBlue antifouling last?

EverBlue should effectively protect against fouling for at least 1 year. Depending on environmental conditions such as temperature, current, and biogenic pressure, the duration can also be 2 to 3 years.

Does EverBlue antifouling also work in salt water?

Our first product, OxyCoat, is suitable for fresh and brackish water. In salt water, the duration of effectiveness can drop to 2-3 months. Therefore, we only recommend OxyCoat for use in inland waters. We are working intensively on a sustainable solution for marine applications as well.

Environment & Safety

Are EverBlue antifouling paints biocide-free?

Outside of Europe, EverBlue products are generally considered biocide-free. In the EU, however, EverBlue products fall under the Biocidal Products Regulation and therefore may not be advertised as biocide-free. The EU has introduced a new class of active substances for in-situ generated free radicals. Since our active oxygen is one of the in-situ generated free radicals, EverBlue falls under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation.

Is EverBlue environmentally friendly?

EverBlue is significantly more environmentally friendly compared to standard biocidal or self-polishing antifouling paints, because a boat hull coated with EverBlue paint releases neither toxic chemicals nor microplastics into the environment. Likewise, EverBlue products are solvent-free and even comply with the limit values for drinking water in Germany. Since EverBlue prevents the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms based on active oxygen, and active oxygen is considered a biocidal active substance in the EU, EverBlue may not be advertised with attributes such as “environmentally friendly” or “harmless” according to the Biocidal Products Regulation.

How do I dispose of EverBlue antifouling paints?

Empty, dry containers as well as dried paint residues can be disposed of as household waste. Allow unused paint to dry out well before disposal. When sanding, the removed material should of course not enter the water, but should be collected and disposed of with household waste.
